There are
about twenty six world heritage sites in India including five natural
sites such as Sunderbans National Park, Keoladeo Ghana Bird Sanctuary,
Kaziranga National Park, Nanda Devi National park and Manas Wildlife
Sanctuary. The cultural sites include the famous white marble Taj Mahal
and Agra Fort at Agra, Fatehpur Sikri, Sun Temple at Konark, Champaner
Pavagadh Archeological Park and Chhatrpati Shivaji Terminus at Mumbai.
The rock cut caves of Ajanta, Ellora and Elephanta along with the Rock
Shelters at Bhimbetka are also listed as the World Heritage Sites in
India.
The great Chola Temples in Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu, the monuments at
Hampi, Mahabalipuram and Pattadakal are the world heritage sites that
display the rich ancient architectural and sculptural achievements of
Deccan India. The monuments at Sanchi, Mahabodhi temple in Bodh Gaya,
the temple complex of Khajuraho, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway and
the Churches and Convents in Goa, all throw important light on different
eras and their uniqueness in Indian history. Humayun's Tomb at Delhi and
the Qutub Minar along with its various monuments have also been enlisted
as the world heritage sites in India.
