Saheliyon-ki-Bari (Courtyard of the Maidens) is a major garden and a popular tourist space in Udaipur in Indian state of Rajasthan. It lies in northern part of the city and has fountains and kiosks, a lotus pool and marble elephants.
It was built by Maharana Bhopal Singh. Saheliyon ki Bari means Garden of the Maids. There is also a small museum here.Sahelion Ki Bari' was laid for a group of forty-eight young women attendants who accompanied a princess to Udaipur as part of her dowry. The gardens set below the embankment of the Fateh Sagar Lake have beautiful lotus pools, marble pavilions and elephant- shaped fountains. These fountains are fed by the water of the lake gushing through ducts made for the purpose. Timing
Saheloyon ki Bari can be visited by the tourist from sunrise till sunset. You will be under the open sky, so choose to visit on an overcast day or early in the evening.
Maharana Sangram singh builds this in the mid 18th century. The 'garden of the maidens' brings to mind the lifestyle of the ladies of the court. The delightful gardens appear discreet and in impeccable taste. There are four pools with dainty kiosks, and all around are flowerbeds, lawns, pools and fountains protected by a series of walls and shady trees.
Later Maharana Bhopal Singhji constructed a pavilion of 'rain fountains' within the Saheliyon ki Bari. The idea was to create an illusion of rain dancing in rhythm with dancing maids.
The garden was constructed for forty-eight young ladies-in-waiting sent to the royal house, as part of the dowry. This small ornamental garden was a popular relaxing spot where royal ladies came for a stroll.
