The Church is situated amidst beautiful surroundings. The illuminated view of Mae De Deus church in the nights has a unique charm. It looks even more attractive at night when lit up with orange and yellow bulbs which reflect on the white walls to create a glowing effect. At night the church appears as if it is made up of paper with yellow and orange bulbs inside which reflect the light out from its thin walls. It looks simply magnificent at night. The church was built in 1873 and enshrines the beautiful statue of Mae De Deus which was brought from the wrecks of the convent of Mae De Deus in old Goa. It is a perfect example of the Gothic style of architecture. The doom shape of the church makes it look more beautiful. The statue of Mae De Deus is venerated in the courtyard of the church. To add to the serenity of the church there are two lofty bells inside the tower.

Mae De Deus church is important heritage in Goa. It is easily accessible from the main parts of Goa. Unfortunately the entry inside the church is restricted. You can have a clear view of the interior of church from the main gate which is open.
The feast of Mae De Deus is celebrated on the first Sunday of May every year in the village of Saligao. On the feast day the Saligao sporting club has their traditional dance –“Foxes nite” which attracts people from all over the world. The performances are held on the Saligao sporting ground next to the Mae De Deus church which is well illuminated at night. Proper fair is held on the feast day and sweets, toys and refreshments are distributed.
How to reach:
By Air:
The Goa international airport is located at Dabolim, which is at a distance of 29 km away from Panaji. The airport connects the domestic cities as well as international cities in U.K. and Germany. Goa to Mumbai and Goa to Delhi flights are making daily services from Goa.
By Train:
The major railway stations in Goa are Margao and Vasco-da-gama. These stations are in the Konkan railway line and are well connected to Mumbai.
